Malaysia student visa: VAL and Student Pass from start to arrival

Once you're admitted to a Malaysian university, the visa journey begins. The path is managed through the EMGS system; understanding the steps saves weeks of unnecessary stress.

Malaysia's student visa is called the Student Pass. It starts with a Visa Approval Letter (VAL) issued through EMGS. The process typically takes 4–8 weeks from when a complete document set is submitted. The Advisor's role is to help you prepare the correct documents and track the application.

Documents, EMGS timeline, costs and renewal for Malaysia's student visa (VAL / Student Pass) — clearly explained by The Advisor.

What is Malaysia's student visa?

Malaysia's student visa has two stages: the Visa Approval Letter (VAL) issued before travel, and the Student Pass stamped in the passport after arrival. Some nationalities also need a Single Entry Visa from the Malaysian embassy before travel.

The role of EMGS

EMGS is the official body that manages international student visa applications in Malaysia. The university submits the file on your behalf, and it passes through document review, immigration approval, and VAL issuance.

Arriving in Malaysia and eVAL

After receiving VAL (or eVAL), the student travels to Malaysia and presents it with the Offer Letter on arrival. Universities or EMGS typically meet the student at the airport to speed up arrival procedures.

Annual renewal

The Student Pass is renewed each year through the university, which submits to EMGS. You need a valid passport, satisfactory academic progress, and a renewed medical check in some cases. Start the renewal 2–3 months before expiry.
